Operating instructions
for transport packages

Transport packages are intended for ensuring safe transportation and storage of radioisotope products. the package includes a shielding container of KT type and an external package (protective package of TOIA type). The general view of the transport packages is shown in Figure 1 (below).

Diagram showing contents of transport package.
Figure 1: Transport package

  • The shielding container is a cylinder shell with a cover (plug) made of lead in accordance with the requirements of Technical Specifications 95.656-79.
  • The auxiliary packing aids are foam polystrene gaskets.
  • The sealing system (metal can) is made in accordance with the requirements of State Standard 5981-82.
  • The protective package is a box made of corrugated cardboard with inserts, gaskets.
Steps to unpack radioactive material
  1. Take the metal can out of the protective package.
  2. Open the can with suitable tool-like can-opener.
  3. Take the shielding container out of the can and put it in a shielding box.
  4. Remove the plug (cover) from the shielding container.
  5. Take the vial with radioactive material out of the shield using a remotely operated tool.

Requirements and control measures in case of leaks from packages

  1. If a package is damaged or if it leaks, the access to such package must be limited, and qualified personnel must evaluate, as soon as possible, levels of the package contamination and radiation.
  2. It is essential that decontamination and other works aimed at eliminating or minimizing the consequences of leakage be carried out, if necessary.
  3. Based on the results of these works, a document supplemented with the results of dosimetric measurements is to be drawn up and sent to supplier of the product.

Safety requirements

  1. Safety steps at every phase of the operation of transport packages with radioactive products must be in compliance with the requirements of “Safety Regulations for Transportation of Radioactive Materials (SRTRM-73),” “Radiation Safety Standards (RSS-99)” and “Main Sanitary Regulations for Provision of Radiation Safety (MSRPRS-99).”
  2. Opening of the container and removal of the radioactive material must be carried out only within appropriate radiation shielding facilities and under the control of the radiation safety service.
